Rotaract Progress: October 29, 2012

I want to start off by an update for the blood drive on Oct 23rd. I had hoped for 30 people. Cascade had expected 15 people, and our turn out was 25 people. Overall this was a success but I'm hoping for over 30 on the next one. We will begin promoting after the Thanksgiving Break and really push after winter.

Next is the canned food drive. We are participating in a competition with the other clubs on campus to find out who can collect the most canned goods to benefit Tacoma Rescue Mission. In this effort, our amazing Treasurer Khan Trim and our VP Richard Kinberg have reached out to the community to make connections for us. We now have an agreement with Galaxy Cinemas in Tacoma and in Gig Harbor to offer discounts to anyone bringing in a non-perishable food item. Make sure to tell your friends and family and look for our boxes with the Rotaract symbol on campus.

Finally I want to introduce you to Allison Newcomb. Allison has agreed to be a volunteer coordinator for us, bringing her experience with coordinating volunteer efforts and connections with the King County volunteer community.

Our efforts now need to be two-fold and I need all the help I can get. First we need to recruit members and volunteers. We need numbers to convince organizations that we can be a valuable partner. Second we need volunteer projects to be involved in. People like to be involved in organizations that are doing things, which of course creates a catch-22. How do we recruit enough people to convince the organizations that we can be valuable?

We will be having a general membership meeting soon, but I am available any time. Feel free to email me at jheller2@uw.edu.

Talk to you again soon,

John E Heller
President-Rotaract at UW-Tacoma.
